How to Fix WhatsApp Notification Delay on Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi Phones Running HyperOS

WhatsApp messages that arrive 5 to 15 minutes late on Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi phones are usually caused by HyperOS pausing the app in the background, not by your network. Allowing Autostart for WhatsApp, setting its Battery saver to No restrictions and locking it in Recents keeps the app reachable for incoming messages. Turning off system-wide Battery saver, clearing all recent apps, or changing Developer options does not help and can make battery life worse. The menu label for No restrictions varies slightly — Redmi EEA builds show it as Unrestricted, while POCO and Xiaomi Global show No restrictions — but the step is the same. Check Settings → About phone → OS version before you start to confirm you are on HyperOS and not on an older MIUI build.

If you use Dual Apps or Second Space, note that each copy of WhatsApp has its own Autostart switch. The fix must be applied to the copy that receives your primary chats. On work-managed phones the toggle can appear greyed out, which means a device policy is controlling background access and the steps below will not change it.

Why this happens on Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi phones

HyperOS includes a per-app background manager that is stricter than stock Android. After the screen has been off for about 10 to 20 minutes, HyperOS stops apps that are marked as restricted from using the network in the background. WhatsApp, Telegram and Gmail are most affected because they need to wake the phone for each incoming message. When restricted, the system batches network checks and you see late or grouped notifications on the lock screen, often only after you unlock.

This is not caused by Wi-Fi signal or by WhatsApp’s own notification setting alone. Two controls determine whether WhatsApp can stay reachable: Autostart permission and the per-app Battery saver mode. If either is set to restricted, WhatsApp is paused and its messages queue until the next time you open the app or the system briefly allows background work. Changing the system-wide Battery saver to Performance does not bypass this — only the per-app setting matters.

On HyperOS 3 and 3.1 the same logic applies. The Battery saver screen was renamed on some EEA builds to show Unrestricted instead of No restrictions, and the Autostart screen moved under Permissions rather than Manage apps on a few Redmi builds, but the underlying control is unchanged. Updates can reset a previously allowed app to restricted, which is why the delay can appear right after an OTA even when it worked before.

Steps to fix WhatsApp notification delay

The steps below use only official Settings. Do them for WhatsApp first, test, then repeat for any other delayed app such as Telegram or Gmail. Each app keeps its own Autostart and Battery saver setting.

Allow Autostart so HyperOS can start WhatsApp in the background after a reboot or after the app has been idle. Setting WhatsApp to No restrictions lets it keep a background connection for push messages without removing battery saving for other apps. Locking the app in Recents tells the recent-apps cleaner not to close it when you tap Clear all. Together, these three keep notifications timely without turning off power saving for the whole phone.

1. Open Settings → Apps → Permissions → Autostart and turn On the switch for WhatsApp. On a small number of Redmi builds the path is Settings → Apps → Autostart — the same toggle. Return to Settings → Apps → Manage apps → WhatsApp and confirm it shows Autostart Allowed. This setting survives a reboot; if it reverts to Restricted, repeat the step after the next OTA.

2. In the same WhatsApp screen, tap Battery saver and choose No restrictions. If you see Unrestricted instead, select that — it is the same option on EEA translation. This allows WhatsApp to use the network in the background. Do not choose this for browsers or shopping apps, which do not need real-time delivery.

3. Open Recents by swiping up and holding, find the WhatsApp card, long-press it and tap Lock. The padlock icon appears on the card. Locked apps are not removed when you clear recents, which prevents the accidental stop that many users trigger.

4. Go to Settings → Notifications & status bar → App notifications, find WhatsApp and ensure Show notifications, Lock screen and Floating notifications are all on. If any of these are off, the message arrives but does not appear on the lock screen, which looks like a delay.

5. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi for five minutes without charging, then ask a contact to send a test message. It should appear on the lock screen within 30 seconds. If it does, leave the settings for two days — the improvement is most visible after the first overnight idle.

If it still does not work

If WhatsApp is still late after the two toggles, the delay is usually being re-applied by another layer that overrides the per-app setting. Check these layers in order rather than changing everything at once. Each item below is a safe next check that explains why the previous step did not hold.

• Dual Apps or Second Space. Open the second space or the Dual Apps copy and re-allow Autostart there as well. HyperOS keeps a separate Autostart flag for each copy, and rebooting Second Space resets it to Restricted by default. Fix the copy that holds your main chats.

• Security cleaner and Game Turbo. Do not add WhatsApp to the automatic cleaner that clears cache. In Security → Settings → Cleaner, remove WhatsApp from the clear list. If you use Game Turbo, open Game Turbo → Settings → Exceptions and add WhatsApp so it is not paused during games.

• Second app’s own battery setting. In Telegram, open Settings → Data and Storage and keep Keep-Alive Service on. In Gmail, ensure Sync Gmail is on inside the Gmail app. These in-app toggles work together with HyperOS — HyperOS must allow the app, and the app must allow background sync.

• Managed or work profile. If the Autostart toggle is greyed out, a work profile or parental-control app is controlling background access. You will not be able to change it until the device admin allows it. Do not try ADB commands to force it.

• Low storage. If storage is under 3 GB free, HyperOS aggressively restricts background work. Free space via Settings → Storage before re-testing, rather than clearing WhatsApp data which would delete chats.

Device and version differences

The fix is the same across Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi on HyperOS 2, 3 and 3.1, but the label and one path element differ. The table below shows the only verified differences; we do not pretend one path fits every phone.

HyperOS 3.1 on Android 16 keeps the same per-app controls. The difference is only wording, not behavior. Use Settings search for Battery saver if your build shows a different translation.

On HyperOS 3 the Autostart screen on Redmi is sometimes under Settings → Apps → Autostart instead of Permissions → Autostart. Both open the same list. Do not change region to get a different translation — the setting works in your current region, and region changes can hide future OTAs.
