Before you unbox

Keep your old phone charged and on Wi-Fi — you will migrate WhatsApp and photos directly. Do not insert a borrowed SIM just to skip setup.

Do not change region during setup

At the Region step, pick the region where you bought the device. Changing to another region for early updates can break carrier aggregation and hide future OTAs. Keep the purchased region.

Checklist — in order

1. Account and updates

  1. Power on → select Region → connect to Wi-Fi → sign into your Xiaomi Account (or create one) and Google account.
  2. Settings → About phone → OS version → Check for updates → install any OTA before installing apps. Plug in and keep battery above 40 %.
  3. Verify OS version shows HyperOS 1.0 or 2.0 after reboot.

2. Privacy in 3 minutes

  1. Settings → Passwords & security → Privacy → Ad services → Personalized ad recommendations → Off.
  2. Security → Settings → Receive recommendations → Off. See the full disable ads guide for every toggle.
  3. Keep Find device → On (stolen-device protection outweighs the ad trade-off).

3. Battery & display

  1. Settings → Display → Refresh rate → Default (Auto) — good balance on this 120 Hz panel.
  2. Settings → Battery → Battery protection → Optimized charging → On for overnight health.
  3. Enable Always-On Display → Scheduled (07:00–23:00) if you use AOD.

4. Backups before apps

  1. Settings → About phone → Back up and restore → Mobile device → back up to Xiaomi Cloud.
  2. Open Google Drive app → Backup → confirm Google backup is on.
  3. Now install WhatsApp / Telegram and restore chats — reversing the order causes duplicate restores.

Safer alternative for bootloader hunters

Do not unlock the bootloader during first setup. Use the phone for a week first; HyperOS updates and warranty checks are simpler on a locked bootloader. Unlocking can erase data.

Post-setup test (5 minutes)

  1. Send a test WhatsApp notification after 10 minutes standby — see the notification delay fix if it lags.
  2. Make a 30-second video and confirm it appears in Google Photos backup.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use Second Space on day one?

No. Set up the primary space fully first; Second Space doubles autostart and backup complexity.

Do I need to install a cleaner app?

No. HyperOS Security already handles cache cleaning. Third-party cleaners duplicate it and often add ads.

How do I move eSIM to this device?

Use your carrier's eSIM transfer — not a region change. Changing region does not migrate eSIM profiles.
