How to Find and Apply Safe HyperOS Themes Through the Official Themes App

HyperOS themes are safest when applied through the preinstalled Themes app using Search → Preview → Apply. This is the official path for HyperOS 3 and 3.1 that applies verified wallpapers, icons and lock-screen styles without third-party APKs or theme files. What does not work is downloading theme files from web links or video descriptions — those often bundle ads or outdated overlays that break widgets on HyperOS 3.1. The Themes app shows a Verified or Official label for safe themes, which is the source check you should use. Check that you are on HyperOS in Settings → About phone before you start.

If a theme you like includes a live wallpaper, note that it will add a small battery cost, especially on POCO F6. Icon-only themes do not. The steps below keep wallpapers, icons and lock screens reversible, so you can try a theme and revert to Default without a factory reset.

Why official Themes app only

Third-party theme files and so-called “latest APK” links are a common source of promoted content that reappears after an update. On HyperOS 3 the system also ties lock-screen widget layout to the theme — an unverified file that was built for MIUI 14 can hide the HyperOS 3 widget row or make dark icons unavailable. The official Themes app is the only path that Xiaomi updates alongside HyperOS, so a theme applied from the app remains compatible after an OTA.

The app also provides the privacy control you need. When you apply a theme from the Themes app, the app records only the theme choice under the Xiaomi privacy policy. Files sideloaded from the web can request broader storage permissions that are not needed for a wallpaper. Xiaomi marks safe themes with a verified badge inside the app near the author name — we treat that badge as the confirmation, and we do not list a theme as eligible unless that badge is present.

A common misunderstanding is that “download” intent means you need a file. For HyperOS, the download is handled inside the Themes app when you tap Apply — no file is saved to Downloads and no Unknown sources toggle is needed. If a site tells you to enable Unknown sources to install a theme, it is not the official path.

Find and apply a safe theme step by step

This uses only the preinstalled Themes app and system Settings. Do not enable Unknown sources and do not change region to find more themes.

The download, preview and apply steps happen inside the Themes app. Preview lets you see what changes — wallpaper, icons, system UI — before you commit, and you can choose to apply only icons or only lock screen if the theme bundles both. That granularity is why the official path is safer and more flexible than a downloaded file.

1. Open Themes from the app drawer, not from a browser. Tap Search at the top and type a style such as “minimal dark” or “material” and press Search. On HyperOS 3.1 the search bar is at the very top of the Themes home.

2. Open a theme that shows Verified or Official near the author name and a download count that looks realistic. Avoid results that ask you to enable Unknown sources or that show an external download button — those are not from the official store.

3. Tap Preview to see lock screen, icons and Always-on Display changes. Check the What changes row — it lists wallpaper, icons and system UI separately. On HyperOS 3.1 the preview also shows whether Dark icons are included, which some older themes do not have.

4. Tap Apply and choose Lock screen, Icons or All — pick only what you need. On HyperOS 3.1 you can apply icons alone without changing the wallpaper, which keeps your current wallpaper and reduces battery impact from live wallpapers. Wait for the Apply confirmation; do not lock the phone during the 5–10 second apply.

5. Return to the home screen and check that icons and lock screen changed. If you applied icons only, your wallpaper should be unchanged. If you applied All and do not like the wall, re-apply only Icons from Themes → Profile → My themes.

If a theme looks broken or heavy

If a theme half-applies, shows missing icons, or makes the lock screen widget row disappear, it is often an older theme not built for HyperOS 3. Revert quickly rather than reinstalling the system.

• Revert to Default. Open Themes → Profile → My themes and apply Default. This restores stock wallpaper and icon grid without deleting your photos.

• Redraw icons. After reverting, open Settings → Apps → Manage apps → System Launcher → Force stop. This redraws the icon pack without a reboot. Check that dark icons now appear correctly.

• Battery after a live wallpaper. If you applied a live wallpaper theme and notice faster drain, re-apply only the Icons part of the theme from My themes. The live wallpaper component is the main drain; icons alone are negligible.

Device and version differences

Safe themes are the same on Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi on HyperOS 3 and 3.1, but the store content and one label differ. The table shows the confirmed variation.

HyperOS 3.1 adds a Dark icons toggle inside some verified themes. If a theme shows no Dark variant, it simply was not built for 3.1 — that is expected.

Do not switch region to see more themes. The verified set for your purchased region is the supported one; switching can delay OTA checks and does not add official themes that are compatible with your build.
