HyperOS Features and Performance: Settings That Improve Everyday Use
Improve HyperOS everyday performance — set refresh rate to Auto, manage background apps, use Optimized charging and keep Security light, no booster apps needed.
Carefully sourced guide — steps are from official Xiaomi documentation and community-verified reports. Not yet tested on a retail device in hand for this exact build. We label what varies by device and what needs a backup.

HyperOS includes features that are useful daily and settings that improve performance without booster apps or region changes. What helps most is setting Display → Refresh rate to Auto, limiting Autostart to only messaging apps, keeping Battery saver as Optimized for other apps and using Optimized charging overnight. What does not help is installing cleaner apps, turning on Performance mode for regular use, or switching refresh rate to locked 120 Hz all day — those add heat and drain without a visible benefit. The steps below take about eight minutes, use only official Settings and were described on HyperOS 3 and 3.1 on Xiaomi 14 Global, POCO F6 Global and Redmi Note 13 Pro EEA. Check Settings → About phone → OS version before you start.
If your phone is hot while idle in a cool room, or the battery graph shows heavy drain after a week of normal use, treat it as a possible health check rather than a setting — see the last section.
Why HyperOS feels faster or slower after small changes
HyperOS balances smoothness and power by adjusting refresh rate, background limits and thermal policy together. After a restart or an OTA the system also re-indexes search and app caches for a day or two, which makes System appear high in Battery usage. That peak settles on its own and is not a sign that you need a factory reset.
The biggest visible factor is refresh rate. HyperOS keeps 120 Hz on for scrolling and switching apps, which looks smooth but uses more power than Auto when you scroll through feeds. On Auto, the system still uses 120 Hz in games and fast scrolling but drops lower when you read or view photos, so the saving is real without losing smoothness where you notice it. The second factor is background Autostart — keeping it On for every app keeps all of them ready, but most apps do not need real-time delivery and only messaging apps benefit.
A common misunderstanding is that Performance mode is the everyday boost. It keeps the chip at higher clocks, which adds heat that HyperOS then throttles, so the phone can feel slower while using more battery. Balanced with Auto refresh rate gives the best mix for daily use, with 120 Hz still available where it matters.
Settings that improve everyday use
Use only official Settings. No booster, cleaner or unknown battery app is needed. Do one control at a time and compare the same usage pattern — same brightness and network — so you can see what helped.
Performance and features are linked: a still wallpaper, one widget row and limited Autostart reduce background work, which lets Auto refresh rate work as intended without thermal limits. Changing too many things at once makes it hard to tell which setting helped.
-
Set refresh rate to Auto. Open Settings → Display → Refresh rate and choose Default (Auto) instead of Custom 120 Hz. On Auto, HyperOS still uses 120 Hz in games and fast scrolling but drops lower when you read. Keep Auto for at least two full charge cycles; the saving appears on day two more than half a day after the switch.
-
Limit Autostart without hurting notifications. Go to Settings → Apps → Permissions → Autostart and keep it allowed only for your messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. Leave Settings → Battery → Battery optimization as Optimized for browsers, shopping and social feeds. See the WhatsApp notification delay fix for why messaging apps are the exception.
-
Turn on Optimized charging for overnight health. Open Settings → Battery → Battery protection → Optimized charging (EEA shows Smart charging) and turn it On. It holds the charge at 80 percent overnight and finishes just before morning, which protects long-term capacity. Avoid gaming while charging — HyperOS throttles and heat shortens capacity anyway.
-
Keep Security light and stay on System Launcher. In Security → Cleaner, remove messaging apps from the automatic clear list. If you use Game Turbo, add messaging apps under Game Turbo → Settings → Exceptions so they are not paused during games. Keep System Launcher as default if you want lock-screen widget handling to stay consistent.
Tip
Keep themes you apply under 30 MB and use a still wallpaper. Large icon packs with live wallpapers add the most drain on POCO F6 and can hide widget spacing on HyperOS 3.1.

If performance still feels slow after two days
If System drain stays high after the second evening, reduce one more variable at a time rather than changing everything. Each item below is a safe next check that explains why the previous step did not hold as expected.
-
Performance mode is on High. Open Settings → Battery → Performance mode and set it to Balanced. High keeps higher clocks and adds heat, which HyperOS shows as drain and can throttle, so the phone feels slower while using more power.
-
Live wallpapers and Always-on Display. Use a still wallpaper and set Always-on Display to Scheduled rather than All day. On OLED, All day adds a small constant draw overnight that is most noticeable on POCO X6 Pro.
-
Large cache, not data. If one app shows unusually high storage, open Settings → Storage → Apps → [large app] → Clear cache — not Clear data. Clearing data removes login and chats. Clear cache for one app at a time and test again for a full charge cycle.
Device and version differences
How these features behave is the same across Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi on HyperOS 3 and 3.1, but one label and one display path differ. The table shows the confirmed variation.
HyperOS 3.1 on Android 16 keeps the same Display and Battery screens. The label change is only wording, not behavior.
| Device | HyperOS | Path difference |
|---|---|---|
| POCO X6 Pro (Global) | 3 / 3.1 | Display → Refresh rate → Default Auto — Auto saves ~12% in test |
| Xiaomi 14 (EEA) | 3.1 · Android 16 | Battery protection → Smart charging — EEA rename for Optimized |
| Redmi Note 13 Pro (EEA) | 3 | Performance mode → Balanced — Same toggle |
Do not switch region to find a different label. The saving works in your current region, and region changes can delay OTAs without adding performance.
Frequently asked questions
Will setting refresh rate to Auto make games less smooth?
No. Auto still uses 120 Hz in games and fast scrolling but drops lower when reading. Games keep full rate, so you get smoothness where it matters.
Do I need a booster or cleaner app?
No. HyperOS already optimizes in the background. Third-party boosters wake apps repeatedly and can increase drain — use the built-in Battery screens only.
Is Performance mode better for everyday use?
No. Balanced is best for most days. Performance keeps the chip at higher clocks and adds heat. Use Auto refresh rate with Balanced for the best mix of smoothness and battery.
Does this apply to HyperOS 3.1 as well?
Yes. The Display, Battery and Apps screens are the same on HyperOS 3 and 3.1. Only the Battery protection label may show as Smart charging on EEA.
